November 1, 2018 Victoria, BC (ISN) – A month and a half ago all eyes and the attention was on the news that the Varsity Belmont Bulldogs Football season would end prematurely, folding under the lack of players to field a team. With that all but forgotten, fast forward to today’s date, and all eyes are on Belmont’s Junior Varsity Football team as they hung on to defeat the South Delta Sun Devils 13-12 to finish their regular season undefeated with an 4-0 record in the AAA Coastal Division to take home field advantage to the playoffs.
Belmont didn’t take long to get rid of their sea legs after traveling to South Delta for the afternoon match up against the fourth place Sun Devils, scoring on their second play of the game on a handoff from QB Simon Hales to Jordan Russell, running it in for a touchdown to set the tone.
The Sun Devils would tighten down on defense after that earlier score, and the Bulldogs would battle to a 7-0 margin to end the first half of play.
The Sun Devils would finally put their first points on the board with a field goal and a safety on a Belmont miscue in their own end zone to pull close 7-5, before Gerren Hardisty would take QB Hunter Bowels’ handoff for a run to give his Bulldogs a some breathing room with a TD to pull ahead 13-5.
The Sun Devils, determined to give the Bulldogs their first loss would pull to within a point of tying the game with another TD (13-12) in the last minute of play, but the Bulldogs defense would come up big when it was needed, turning aside the Sun Devils two-point conversion attempt at the win, holding on to the single point victory and a perfect record.
Playoffs will begin next week on November 8th, where the Bulldogs, holding on home field advantage with their first place finish, will take on a wild card team to yet be announced. Game time is 3 pm at Goudy Field in Langford, BC.
