Katie Wayling sets up a winning weekend for Chargers women’s volleyball

Fourth-year Charger Katie Wayling set up a staggering 97 assists over 9 sets of play against Capilano to lead her team to a winning weekend and her first pair of PACWEST & CCAA Athlete of the Week awards!

Fans from far and wide were treated to a super charged weekend of volleyball on Nov 9 and 10 as the Camosun women chalked up two epic victories in their battle against the visiting Capilano University Blues.


Fourth-year setter and BSFL student, Katie Wayling was a key force in each of the Chargers take-downs and her stellar performance is being recognized with this week’s PACWEST and CCAA Athlete of the Week awards.


Katie always brings an energetic style of play to the floor,” said Chargers Head Coach Brent Hall of his team’s veteran co-captain. “This week, Katie displayed her composure under pressure and led the team through many tight sets with critical serving runs, including 6 aces, and tenacious defense, yielding 15 digs. She delivered the ball to our hitters with great skill, resulting in 97 assists. She has distinguished herself as a leader was instrumental in keeping the team on track and leading the Chargers to victory.” 


Several Chargers made major contributions to Camosun’s success on the weekend, including fifth-year libero Mychaela Roelants (AD Arts) who delivered a combined total of 26 digs against the Blues. Roelants maintains her status as the top dig-maker in the conference, averaging 3.56 digs per set. Belmont grad and Chargers middle Hannah May (AD Arts) produced 23 kills, 4 blocks and 5 aces while International recruit Mika Yamada (ELD) from Japan excited fans with her weekend tally of 22 kills, 26 digs and 1 ace.


“Our matches against Capilano were a testament to progress made over the course of the season so far,” states Coach Hall. “The athletes highlighted their potential with some outstanding play – such as in our 25-5 set win to open the Saturday match, which included 12 aces. They are continually raising the bar, and putting in work to improve in key areas. We had exceptional performances from several athletes, including Katie Wayling, Mychaela Roelants, and Hannah May. Mika Yamada had a breakout game and made major contributions both nights as well.”

Heading into Week 6 of PACWEST competition, the Chargers are 5-3 and tied for second place with the Douglas College Royals. This weekend, the Chargers face off against the College of the Rockies Avalanche (3-7) in Cranbrook.


“The long trip to Cranbrook is a unique challenge to overcome and the College of the Rockies Events Staff and fans always create a lively atmosphere,” concludes Coach Hall. “We can always expect tenacious defense from COTR, so beating them means weathering a storm and playing clean. I believe our teams are well-matched and look forward to competing. My hope is to earn two more wins and remain tied for second in the PACWEST standings!”
