The Camosun Chargers Women’s Basketball team collected a pair of exciting back-to-back home game wins against the CBC Bearcats and Langara College Falcons on the November 16-17 weekend and have now reached the end of the first half of the PACWEST season. At 3-3, the Chargers are fourth in the conference standings and ranked #14 nationally.
The Chargers were led this past weekend by fourth-year veteran Kathryn Candell, who made a strong and timely return to the court after sitting out for the past three games following a knee injury from the first game of the season. The fourth-year Camosun College Nursing student scored a weekend total of 38 points to lead the Chargers to victory.
“Kat really stepped up for us,” states Chargers Head Coach Cait Haggarty. “She hurt her knee in the first game and needed the time to be pain free before returning to play. After being injured for the past three weeks, she led the way Friday night versus CBC by scoring 23 points and adding 3 assists and 2 steals in just 13 minutes of play. On Saturday, Kat continued to have a tremendous impact and finished the game with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. She played with composure and found ways to score when we really needed it. It was great to see her find her rhythm both offensively and defensively for us!”
Newcomer Chloe Scaber from Claremont Secondary (Arts & Science) added 17 points to Friday’s fight against the Bearcats while third-year forwards Mia Roberts (AD Arts) and Jasmine de Vries (Bachelor Sport Management) bolstered Saturday’s win over Langara with 19 and 13 points respectively. First-year forward Maddison Manns (Criminal Justice) made an impressive showing with a total of 17 rebounds for the weekend.
Three Chargers end the first half on the PACWEST League Leaders list:
Tessa Lannon-Paakspuu #4 in Assists (2.83/G)
Maddison Manns
Ashley McGinnis

The Chargers basketball teams take a break for exams and the holidays with action resuming on January 4, 2019. The second half of the season will see teams competing in a double-header format. The Chargers take on Langara in Vancouver the first weekend, followed by a BYE and following that, six consecutive weeks of home and away competition. The Chargers will have to wait until the January 18-19 weekend to play their first home games which are against Douglas College.
“The second half of the season is a grind,” says Coach Haggarty. “Hopefully the first half has given everyone a taste of what it takes. We will work hard over the break and then see what’s possible come the New Year!”
