Chippy Affair Last Night In WJC Pre Tournament Game Between USA and Czechs

Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre Team USA defeated the Czech Republic 6-2 in World Junior pre-tournament play. New York Islanders 1st round pick Oliver Wahlstrom had two goals while Vancouver Canucks prospect Quinn Hughes had two assists. Sasha Chmelevski had a goal and an assist in the game as well. Czech Republic goaltender Jakub Skarek stopped 21 of the 24 shots that he faced through the first half of the game, while Jiri Patera stopped 17 of 20 in the back half. Team USA goaltender Kyle Keyser stopped 19 of the 21 shots that he faced, while also recording an assist on Chmelevski’s goal.

1st Period:

Team USA’s Oliver Wahlstrom scored twice in the first period. He opened the scoring 40 seconds into the game, assisted by Vancouver Canucks 7th overall pick Quinn Hughes off a Czech Republic turnover. Wahlstrom struck again at 3:37, this time assisted by both Jack Hughes and Quinn Hughes. Team USA capped off a dominant period with a goal from Phil Kemp at 17:26, assisted by Sasha Chmelevski. Shots after one were 20-2 USA.

2nd Period:

The Czech Republic got on the board at 9:27 of the second period with a goal from Jakub Lauko, assisted by Karel Plasek and Jachym Kondelik. Ottawa Senators prospect Josh Norris went on to score on the power play, assisted by Jason Robertson and Ryan Poehling, restoring Team USA’s three-goal cushion. Sasha Chmelevski then made it 5-1 USA with less than one minute remaining in the period. Shots after two were 32-10 USA.

3rd Period:

Carolina Hurricanes prospect Martin Necas struck on the power play for the Czech Republic, cutting their deficit to 3. The goal was assisted by Detroit Red Wings first round pick Filip Zadina. Team USA answered with a short-handed goal from Ty Emberson, assisted by Josh Norris at 16:36 of the third period. Team USA went on to defeat the Czech Republic 6-2. Shots at the end of regulation were 44-21 USA.
