The 2019 BC Junior Curling Championships have come to a close with the reigning World Junior Champions, Team Tardi, claiming the junior men’s title with a 9-2 win over Team Colwell at Vernon Curling Club.
While Langley and Victoria’s Team Tardi (Tyler Tardi, Sterling Middleton, Matthew Hall, Alex Horvath) and Vernon, Kelowna and Invermere’s Team Colwell (Erik Colwell, Logan Miron, Ben Morin, Tyler Powell) blanked the first end, Team Tardi took the lead in the second end with three points.
Team Tardi maintained their lead throughout the game, with a 6-0 score after four ends. Team Colwell notched single points in the fifth and eighth ends, but eventually fell 9-2.
This is the fourth year in a row that Team Tardi has won the BC Junior Men’s Championship. The team won the 2017 and 2018 Canadian Junior Curling Championships and will be looking to win that event for a third year in a row, something which has never been done before.
“It means a lot. Every single one is special, it doesn’t matter if it’s your first or last, it’s always an honour to represent your province and we’re excited to go back again,” said Tardi.
“It’s obviously a thought that’s always lingering in the back of your mind, knowing it’s never been done before,” Tardi said of the possibility of winning a third Canadian Juniors. However, him and his teammates are focusing on just playing their best.
“We actually have a lot of fun out there on the ice. They’re all great shooters,” Tardi said of his teammates. “We all work really well together, we all have a lot of knowledge of the game.”
The 2019 Canadian Junior Curling Championships will be taking place in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan from January 19 to 27. BC will be represented by Team Tardi in the junior men’s competition and by Team Daniels in the junior women’s competition.
