The fifth annual Winter Classic is fast approaching as the UBC Thunderbirds will host the Calgary Dinos on Friday, January 18, 2019 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
Expecting yet another sold out venue of nearly six thousand strong, the ‘Birds will not only face one of their fiercest Canada West rivals, but the game could prove critical in the quest for UBC to secure a home playoff berth for the second consecutive season.
Since the inaugural Winter Classic in 2015, the event continues to grow and has now become one of the highlights of the calendar year not just for UBC Athletics but the entire campus.
Those in attendance will be treated to an atmosphere like no other at UBC with a pre-game festival, live DJ’s, games, prizes, and even a mechanical bull for those brave enough.
The 2019 Winter Classic will see the 10-9-1 Thunderbirds host the 13-6-1 Dinos for the first time since last season’s Canada West quarter-final playoff series that saw Calgary defeat UBC in the third and deciding game. It was the second straight first round playoff series between the T-Birds and Dinos as the two have quickly developed one of the biggest rivalries in the conference.
Prior to puck drop, former UBC Athletic Director and men’s hockey coach Dr. Bob Hindmarch will drop the puck in a ceremonial faceoff, recognizing his recent appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada.
