Canadian tennis player, Vasek Pospisil underwent successful surgical microdisectomy on Friday, January 18 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Frank P. Cammisa Jr., who specializes, in among other things, athletic spinal injuries, performed the procedure.

“After exhausting multiple options, it was determined that the best course of action was for Vasek to undergo surgical microdiscectomy to repair his herniated disk.” said Dr. Cammisa. “By removing the abnormal disk material that was pressing on a nerve root, combined with proper post-operative rehabilitation, he is expected to make a full recovery and return to competitive tennis in three months.”

Pospisil, currently ranked 74th in the ATP rankings, sustained the injury during a match at the Paris Master on October 31, 2018. After undergoing an extensive consultation process for several months under the supervision of Orthopaedic Surgeon of Sports Medicine, Dr. John Theorodopoulos at Mount Sinia Hospital in Toronto and Director of Rehabilitation, Dr. Pavel Kolar from the Hospital Motol, Charles University in Prague, all medical professionals agreed that surgery was the last and best option for a full recovery.

“It’s been a really difficult few months for me but I’m so fortunate to have had such a great team of doctors around me that made sure I had the very best care,” said Pospisil.  “I’ll work hard to get healthy, but I know I need to be patient in my recovery. I’m grateful for Dr. Kolar, Dr. Theorodopoulos, and Dr. Cammisa and all those working at the various hospitals for their professionalism and top notch care during this difficult time.”
