Volleyball Canada and Volleyball Quebec are pleased to announce that the 2019 NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation) Women’s Challenge Cup will be held in Châteauguay, Quebec, May 28 to June 02, 2019.
The venue will be the Sportplex Beau-Château, also the location of Volleyball Quebec’s Academy program for developing athletes.
“Volleyball Quebec is thrilled to provide an opportunity for fans everywhere in the province to come watch women’s international volleyball,” said Martin Gérin-Lajoie, Volleyball Quebec Executive Director and member of the organizing committee.
“Organizing this international tournament in the home of Volleyball Quebec’s Academy alongside our partner Volleyball Canada is also meaningful for the relationship that the Academy is to have with the National Team programs. We are already planning activities for prospective Academy athletes to have a firsthand experience during this international event.”
The Challenge Cup is part of the women’s qualification process for FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL), which was launched last year. The winner of this year’s tournament qualifies to the FIVB Volleyball Nations League Challenge Cup Final.
“It has been several years since we have held a women’s international event in Quebec, although the province has hosted men’s international events recently, and is the site of our men’s National Team training centre (in Gatineau). We are very excited to bring women’s international volleyball back to Quebec,” said Volleyball Canada’s Director of International Events, Alan Ahac. “We are confident that Volleyball Quebec and the local organizing committee members will be excellent hosts, and we’re looking forward to some exciting matches in Châteauguay.”
Teams are yet to be announced. Last year Canada took silver at this tournament, which was held in Edmonton, after losing an exciting final match to Puerto Rico.
