The PACWEST is proud to announce that Karoline Tormena of the VIU Mariners women’s volleyball team has been named the Female Athlete of the Year across all-sports.
She was instrumental in driving the Mariners to another CCAA championship banner after being named the PACWEST Player of the Year and PACWEST championship tournament MVP.
The first year Brazilian collected 219 kills during the regular season along with 141 digs, 28 service aces and 21 blocks. Then at the PACWEST championship tournament she was a force with 23 kills, 17 digs, four blocks and two aces despite have flu like symptoms.
“Karol has been a leader on the court in almost every category,” says head coach Shane Hyde. “We knew she was an incredible player but the more she got comfortable with the systems and the language the more she impressed us. She is the type of player that can quickly change a match with her offensive ability. She is very hard on herself to be great and I think that attitude made the entire team push for excellence.”
At her first CCAA national championship she was named a Second Team All-Star. In the gold medal match she was named the Player of the Match after 14 kills, two blocks and eight digs.
“During the national run she was the player that supplied confidence to a team already filled with talent and experience,” continued Hyde. “Knowing she was on the court allowed everyone to play their own game rather than try to do too much.”
Incredibly this is the fourth straight season a player from the Mariners women’s volleyball program has been named the Athlete of the Year across all-sports. Tormena follows in the footsteps of Mikayla Wagner (2018), Megan Rosenlund (2017) and Tyler Turnball (2016).
