The Greater Vancouver Comets won their third straight league title, after sweeping the Fraser Valley Rush in two (2) games to claim the 2018-2019 Female Midget AAA (FMAAA) Championship at Planet Ice in Coquitlam, BC.
The Comets took game one (1) 5-3, as Jenn Gardiner (Surrey) had two (2) goals, including the game-winner, and an assist to lead Greater Vancouver to the victory.
In game two (2), Greater Vancouver jumped out to a three (3) goal first period lead and were paced by a hat-trick from Jenna Buglioni (Port Moody) and came out with a 6-2 victory to claim the FMAAA championship.
The Comets finished in first place in the regular season after a 32-0 record during the regular season. They had a first-round bye in the playoffs and then defeated the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers two (2) games to none in the league semi-final. The Rush earned their way to the final after beating the Northern Capitals two (2) games to none.
Greater Vancouver will travel east to face the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League (AFHL) champion St. Albert Slash from April 5-7, 2019 in the Pacific Midget Female Regionals for the right to represent the Pacific region at the 2019 ESSO Cup taking place April 21-27 in Sudbury, Ontario.
The FMAAA program consists of five (5) zone-based teams that are spread across the province – the Fraser Valley Rush, Greater Vancouver Comets, Northern Capitals, Thompson-Okanagan Lakers, and Vancouver Island Seals. The teams play a 32-game regular season schedule, followed by the playoffs.
The FMAAA program was initiated in the 2007-2008 season in response to the membership’s desire to provide an opportunity for elite female hockey players to come together on zone teams to challenge other elite female Midget teams. The league has had nearly 100 players move on to post-secondary hockey opportunities.
