VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women’s golf team have two in the Top 10 after Day 3 of the Canadian University/College Golf Championship at Firerock Golf Course in Komoka, Ont. The Vikes dropped to third place (+48) in the team standings with an eight stroke gap to close on second-placed UBC (+40), and a 30-stroke gap on leaders Laval (+34)
First-year Vike Sukriti Harjai shot a 78 (+5) in her third round and is tied for second with UBC’s Shania Remandaban. Harjai struggled on the back nine with two bogeys and two double bogeys, while her opening nine holes she was 2-under-par after carding three birdies. Vike Nicole Gargarella is currently tied for fifth with Montreal’s Mylene Limoges. Gargarella shot a 77 after going par on 15 holes.
“The women unfortunately lost a bit of ground today but still find themselves in a position where they can threaten the lead tomorrow if they get a food full team effort,” said Vikes head coach Justin Clews. “Nicole played steady today making a lot of pars. Sukriti got off to a great start but unfortunately lost some shots coming in.”
Laval’s Catherine Gariépy and Anais Galas both shot four-over on day three, helping to maintain the Rouge et Or’s cushion over the field. The three-time defending champion University of British Columbia Thunderbirds are six shots behind Laval, at 40-over.
“Despite the team having an uphill battle tomorrow, Sukriti and Nicole sit in great positions to overtake the individual lead, which will make for a fun and exciting final round,” added Clews. “The women tee off first thing in the morning at 7:30 am Eastern Time.”
The individual champions in the women’s and men’s competitions receive exemptions into their respective Canadian Amateur Championship.
