Teams representing Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley, and the BC Interior will travel to Edmonton, Alberta for U18 Western Canadian Sevens Championship

BC Rugby is excited to announce the four boys’ BC Elite Youth Sevens teams set to compete at the Western Canadian Sevens Championships. The tournament is scheduled for February 16 and 17 at Foote Field in Edmonton, Alberta.  The teams have been selected from BC Rugby’s Elite Youth Sevens Program and will face teams from Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario as well as a Rugby Canada Development Academy side over the two-day tournament.

The four teams competing for BC in the tournament represent different regions in the province: BC Island, BC Mainland, BC Valley & BC Interior.  Each of these four regions has been involved in a process of identification, training and selection since late 2019 and the Western Canadian Sevens Championships will be the first opportunity for the players to play full matches.  The Boys’ Elite Youth Sevens program, headed up by Adam Roberts, is a yearlong program designed to give meaningful and periodic competition for top Rugby Sevens players in the province.

“The Elite Youth Sevens program is all about providing young players in BC with meaningful and competitive rugby sevens experience, and the U18 Western Canadian Sevens Championships are a great opportunity for that,” said Rugby Development Manager (Men/Boys’) Aaron Takel.

Mainland head coach Aaron McLelland praised the talent of his squad as well as the other three regional teams, adding that that “the boys are looking forward to playing an exciting brand of high tempo rugby.”
