Men’s Volleyball Saturday Recap

Douglas Royals 3 – 27-29, 25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12
Capilano Blues 2

The Royals clinched first place in a thrilling five set victory over the Blues on Saturday. Reid Marriott had a team high 15 kills and Max Haronga and Matt Shand each had 14.

The Blues on the other hand will finish third despite having an identical record as the VIU Mariners at 18-6. In the head to head meetings the Mariners won three of four, so they clinch a first round playoff bye while the Blues now need to prepare for the sixth place UFV Cascades in a PACWEST quarterfinal. Ben Friesen played his best match as a Blue with 18 kills and Rafael Hilario collected 17.

VIU Mariners 3 – 25-19, 15-25, 32-34, 25-23, 15-6
Camosun Chargers 2

With an exciting fifth set victory for the Mariners on Saturday, they claim second place in the standings and will receive a first round playoff bye. Jeff Webb caught fire and tallied a team high 21 kills and had eight digs.

As for the Chargers, Vitor Pereira carried his club offensively after an incredible 30 kill effort on Saturday. Eduardo Bida was also a major factor with 13 kills.

With the loss the Chargers will fit into the fourth place slot and battle the COTR Avalanche who finished in the fifth spot in a PACWEST quarterfinal on Thursday.

CBC Bearcats – 3 – 25-21, 25-22, 25-17
UFV Cascades – 0

The Bearcats end their season on a high after a three-set sweep of their crosstown rival. They finish with just two wins and are on the outside looking in at the PACWEST championship. Noah Bouius collected nine kills to lead the ‘Cats who did have a balanced attack.

The Cascades finish sixth in the standings and will meet the Capilano Blues in Thursdays’ quarterfinal. Josh Willems had a team high seven kills as the book closed on 2019.
