The Camosun Chargers Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams will shoot for gold at the 2020 PACWEST Provincial Championships, hosted by Capilano University, Feb. 27-29 in North Vancouver. The action starts this Thursday with the gold medal matches set for Saturday evening at 5:30pm (Women) and 8pm (Men).

With a record of 7-11, the Chargers women finish the regular season as the fifth-seeded team and face the No. 4 Langara College Falcons in Thursday’s 5:30pm quarterfinal.

“Although we are on a losing streak, the team has shown a lot of character over the last five games against the top three teams in the league,” says Chargers Head Coach Justin Thiessen. “We’ve proved to ourselves that if we have complete buy-in to what we are trying to do, and to our identity, that we can have success. We are looking to finish strong and show everyone who we really are.”

On the men’s side, the Chargers ended their regular season 8-10 and enter the playoffs as the No. 4 seed. The squad begins their quest for gold with a quarterfinal match up against the fifth-seeded Langara Falcons at 3pm.

“We’ve had three close games with Langara this season,” states Camosun Head Coach Scot Cuachon. “They play a high paced, high scoring style of basketball and should challenge us to bring our best effort and execution on both ends of the floor. Our team’s preparation throughout the season, unwavering support and belief in each other are key to a successful run.”

The winner of the PACWEST Women’s Gold medal match will advance to the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship, hosted this year by Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. Action begins on Thursday, March 18. As the host team, the VIU Mariners, receive an automatic berth to the National Championship, which will guarantee the presence of two PACWEST teams at the event. Olds College (AB) won the title last year. The last (and only) time a PACWEST team won the CCAA Women’s Basketball Nationals was in 1998, by VIU (formerly Malaspina University College).

Similar to the women’s draw, the CCAA men’s event makes room for two PACWEST teams to compete for the crown, thanks to a wildcard. The men’s championship will be hosted by Humber College in Etobicoke, ON, from March 18-21. The Mariners are the defending champions.

The PACWEST Provincial Basketball Championships run from Thursday, Feb. 27 – Saturday, Feb. 29, with matches beginning at 12:30pm each day.
