Paul Stewart

Paul Stewart

Paul Stewart holds the distinction of being the first U.S.-born citizen to make it to the NHL as both a player and referee. On March 15, 2003, he became the first American-born referee to officiate in 1,000 NHL games.  Today, Stewart is an officiating and league discipline consultant for the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) and serves as director of hockey officiating for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Devolution of an NHL Suspension

The other day, someone asked me what I thought of the NHL's educational video about how the Department of Player Safety gathers information about on-ice incidents for review and the steps involved in supplementary discipline. I had not been aware of the video's existence,...

Answering to a Higher Authority: The Good of the Game

I was far from a great natural talent as a hockey player. When I first took up officiating, I may not have been the most naturally gifted referee, either. However, I dare say that there are few people in the game over the course...

Gretzky Greatness Found in Acts of Kindness

Loyalty to the Game, Not the Laundry
