By Ali Lee, Vikes Communications

uvic logo webSeptember 13, 2012, VICTORIA, B.C. - The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team is pleased to announce that former team Canada member Leanne Evans is joining the team as the assistant coach for the 2012-13 season.

"We are very excited to have Leanne on board with the Vikes," said Dani Sinclair, associate Vikes women's basketball coach. "Leanne brings a wealth of experience and will provide overall great coaching to the team, especially in helping develop our forwards."

Evans brings both knowledge and experience from her eight-year history with the Canadian national team program, as well as University-level basketball in both the United States and the Canada West. Evans began her collegiate experience at Southeast Missouri in 2004-05, where she helped the Redhawks go 14-2 in conference play. Evans, originally from Port Moody, returned to Canada and after red shirting a year, competing three seasons with the UBC Thunderbirds

As a T-Bird, Leanne won CIS national titles in 2006 and 2008 and was named the Canada West Defensive Player of the Year in 2009. The six-foot-two center continued her playing career professionally in both Australia and Sweden. In 2010, Evans spent a year competing for Townsville Fire in the nine-team WNBL league, based in Australia. In 2011, Evans relocated to Sweden where she competed for Stockholm 08 and was third on the team in points-per-game average.

Evans competed for both the Under-19 and Under-21 Canadian national team programs and competed at the Junior World Cup. Evans was also selected to represent Canada at the World Universiade (FISU) games in Thailand in 2007 before competing for three years with the Canadian senior team

The 26-year old now turns a new corner as she embarks on her first full-time coaching opportunity. Evans previously coached youth while oversees and at summer camps with the Thunderbirds.

"This is such a good opportunity for me after my playing career," said Evans about her new role. "I previously played under (head coach) Rich Chambers when I was a junior and was really excited to get this chance to be a part of one of his programs. Working with Dani will be a great experience this year as I develop as a coach and I am excited to pass on what I have learned as a player."

The Vikes women's basketball team will be in full action Oct. 12-13 in an exhibition series against UBC-Okanagan at McKinnon gym at 6 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. The Vikes' home openers will also be against UBC-Okanagan on Nov. 2 and Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. For more information visit: http://govikesgo.com
