By Ali Lee, Vikes Communications

UVic-Logo web-(1)October 20, 2012, VICTORIA - The University of Victoria Vikes men's basketball team found their step a little too late as the University of Carlton Ravens dominated in the first three quarters to win 87-63 in game four of the Guy Vetrie Memorial tournament hosted on Ken and Kathy Shields Court at the McKinnon Gymnasium on Saturday.

The visiting side led by as much as 37 points throughout the game as the Ravens improve to a 2-0 record throughout the pre-season tournament.

Third-year guard Philip Scrubb was all over the court, putting up 25 points for the Ravens, seven in field attempts, two from outside the arc and nine from the line. The six-foot-three Richmond, B.C. native was perfect in foul throws and also added six assists. Third-year forward Thomas Scrubb contributed 18 points, while fourth-year Dan Penneradded 12.

For the Vikes, fifth-year guard Michael Acheampong (Toronto, Ont.) led the way with 13 points, while second-year Vijay Dhillon (Richmond, B.C.) came off the bench to add 13 points, all in the fourth quarter. Third-year Chris McLaughlin (Oakville, ON) put in some crucial minutes and added 9 points.

The Ravens ran away with seven points right from the tip off until fourth-year Terrell Evans (Las Vegas, NV) pushed through the paint to nail a jumper and get the Vikes on the board. The Ravens out-shot the Vikes 31-19 in the first quarter, thanks to 12 points, including two threes, from Phillip Scrubb.

The Vikes let the game slip away in the second quarter, as the UVic side scored only four points to Carlton's 26. The Ravens lead 57-23

The third quarter was where the Vikes began to find their comfort level starting with some good work under the hoop by senior Pierce Anderson (Calgary, AB). Anderson tallied nine points in the third quarter as the Vikes matched the Ravens' 20 points. The Ravens' deep bench proved its capability as Kyle Smendziuk, Jean Emmaniuel Pierre-Charles and Dan Penner all came off the bench to contribute in the third quarter.

The Vikes entered the fourth quarter down by a 34-point margin and were able to close the gap to as low as 22. Some sharp shooting from outside the arc saw Dhillon drain back-to-back threes, followed by a quick jumper that put the Vikes within 23 points. Dhillon's late scoring run paired with some crucial early buckets by McLaughlin gave the Vikes the 20-10 fourth-quarter edge.

Late heroics proved to be too little too late as Carlton, the 2012 CIS champions, defeated the home side 87-63. With the win, Carlton improved their record at the Guy Vetrie tournament to 2-0, while the Vikes are now 1-1.

The Vikes men will play the Alberta Golden Bears, 2012 CIS silver medallists, tomorrow, Oct .21 at 2 p.m., while the Ravens will face off with the Lethbridge Pronghorns at 12 p.m. Both games will take place at McKinnon gym and will be broadcast live at http://canadawest.tv
