Ryan McQuillan. Highlanders Communications

HighlandersLogoJune 17, Victoria, BC (ISN) - The Peninsula Co-op Highlanders' win streak wass stretched to four after a 7-0 rout of Coquitlam Metro Ford SC. Their recent offensive surge continued as they have now out-scored their opponents 17-1 in their last three games.

The first half's lone goal was scored by Liz Hansen in the 18' minute when she chipped it over the keeper from 24 yards out off a feed by Emily Stenerson. Hansen was dangerous all game, hitting the crossbar two minutes later in the 20' and then in the 27' minute as well. Stenerson followed up in the 30' minute with a good chance of her own from 25 yards away only to have it tipped over the bar by Metro Ford's keeper.

Despite finishing the first 45 minutes with a 1-0 lead, Head Coach Dave Dew still felt as though the squad still had a lot of room for improvement.

"We discussed trying to play more simply with better pace of game," he said. "I also challenged them to overcome their frustration and work together to positively impact their ability to score. They answered the challenge, scoring six goals."

The goals started to come for the Highlanders in the 58' minute when Mariel Solsberg scored off of a nice sequence of passing by Hansen and Maryse Reichgeld. One minute later, Amy Lawrence sent a great diagonal ball to Reichgeld, who fed it to Shannon Elder for another quick goal. The Highlanders made it three goals in three minutes when Solsberg scored again after a beautiful combination of 1-touch passes between her, Reichgeld, Hansen and Jaclyn Sawicki; making the score 4-0.

The next goal came in the 67' minute after a fortuitous bounce when Sawicki drove a hard cross into Metro-Ford's box and it bounced off of a defender into their net for an own goal. Sawicki scored her own when, in the 76' minute, she took a diagonal pass from Elder that split the defenders and put it away to give the Highlanders a 6-0 lead.

In the 85' minute of the game the Highlanders had a brief defensive breakdown forcing keeper Olivia DeGoede to make a fantastic save. She then punted the ball 60 yards down field and the ball was met out of the air with a great touch by Reichgeld. Reichgeld laid it to Jackie Harrison and received it soon after in a give-and-go sequence; she was then able to put it away to close the scoring in the game at 7-0 for Victoria.

"The first half we weren't that sharp," said Dew. "We really answered the bell in the second half to play at the standards we set as a group, doing things the way we do them at the training ground."

DeGoede shared goal-keeping duties with Samantha Behm, who played the first 70 minutes of the game. Together they combined to give the Peninsula Co-op Highlanders their second clean sheet in a row. 15-year old Ella Mosky debuted for the Highlanders at the Centre Midfeild position for a 25 minute spell.

The Highlanders play their next game at home on Tyndall Turf next Sunday, June 23rd, against NSGSC Eagles at 1:00 pm. They will be looking to extend their win streak to five and tighten their grasp on second place in the PCSL.
