UVic-Logo web-(1)October 28, 2012, London, ON - In their final pre-season match, the University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team defeated the University of Western Ontario Mustangs 82-74 on Sunday in London, Ontario. The Vikes dominated in the third quarter to give them the convincing victory, their fourth-straight on the road.

The Vikes had three players score in double digits including fifth-year Debbie Yeboah (Winnipeg, MB), who added 23 points. Yeboah has led the Vikes women in scoring in every game throughout the Ontario tour. Also making heavy contributions are third year Jessica Renfrew (Victoria, BC) who added 20 points, as well as point guard Cassandra Goodis (Penticton, BC), who chipped in for 11.

The Mustangs also had three key scorers, who were in the double digits including Jenny Vaughan, with 21, and Laura Dally and Melissa Rondinelli, with 13 and 12, respectively. Dally also tallied nine rebounds, two steals and was perfect from the line.

The Vikes trailed 23-14 at the end of the first quarter but out-scored the Mustangs in the second quarter to catch up. The Vikes did well from the line as Goodis went four-for-four, while Yeboah impresed making seven of eight free throw attempts. The Vikes were 83.3 per cent collectively from the line, adding important points that contributed to the victory.

With their first regular season games around the corner, the Vikes women looked sharp, capitalizing to score 29 points off Mustang turnovers and scoring 30 of their points in the paint.

The Vikes women will begin their Canada West campaign this weekend, Nov. 2-3, with a double header against the UBC Okanagan Heat. On Nov. 2, the 6 p.m. game will be also be held in conjunction with the annual "Days of Thunder" that encourages the University of Victoria residence and student population to come out to cheer at the basketball home openers. The Vikes' Nov. 3 game will take place at 5 p.m. Both games will be at McKinnon gym and streamed live at http://uvic.canadawest.tv
