UVic-Logo web-(1)November 16, 2012, VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team earned a 73-61 victory over the Trinity Western Spartans on Nov. 16 at McKinnon Gym. The Vikes improved their record to 3-2, while the Spartans are still on the hunt for their first win with an 0-5 record.

The Vikes were led in scoring by senior Debbie Yeboah (Winnipeg, MB), who despite sitting out the second quarter, earned 25 points. Guard Cassandra Goodis (Penticton, BC) took aim in the latter part of the game to finish with 12 points and five boards, while Chelsea McMullen (Prince George, B.C.) added 11 points.

"The girls definitely turned it around in the third quarter," said Vikes associate coach Dani Sinclair. "[Trinity Western] did push us and we need to be able to sustain our efforts longer and be more consistent."

For the Spartans, Holly Strom was the undisputed leader, as the five-foot-eleven forward carried her team with 25 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Forward Laurissa Weigl chipped in 11 points for the visitors, while Emily Knauff added nine points, six rebounds and four steals.

The Vikes struggled in the opening quarter, as turnovers and unforced errors allowed the Spartans to go on an early 8-0 run. Following a needed time out, the Vikes regrouped and cleaned up their offensive execution, as Yeboah was able to help put the Vikes in the lead with eight first-quarter points. Spartans' Strom added seven points despite the Vikes leading 17-14 at the first break.

Goodis ran the floor in the second quarter with seven straight points for the Vikes in a turnover-heavy quarter that saw the home side enter the break with a 34-29 edge.

Fourth-year Kristen Monasterski (Marwayne, AB) made her first appearance ever for the Vikes in the third quarter as the six-foot-three forward has been battling an injury since the pre-season. Monasterski contributed two points, three rebounds and one block in her first shift. Yeboah tallied 12 third-quarter points for the Vikes to lead 58-44 with one quarter remaining.

"It was the first chance for Victoria to really see Kristen [Monasterski]," said Sinclair about the Grant MacEwan transfer. "She definitely gives us some size and changes the pace of the game."

The Vikes were out-shot 17-15 in the final quarter, as Strom impressed with 11 points for the Spartans. The Vikes picked up their third win of the season, finishing with a 73-61 victory and will host Trinity Western again tomorrow, Nov. 17, at 5:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live at http://uvic.canadawest.tv
