IMG 3584The loud and boisterous UVic fans went home happy after Zac Andrus gathered in a missed 3 point attemptby teammate Ryan McKinnon and deposited it in the bucket as the horn sounded to win the game 77-75 for the Vikes over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.

 

 

 In what can best be described as 'One hell of a basketball game', both teams came prepared to play with the lead changing 14 times throughout the night.

A determined Wolfpack got out to an early 16-14 lead after the first quarter but the Vikes dug down and outscored their opponents in the second to go into the halftime break up by 1.

Both teams battled hard in the third quarter, knocking down 23 points each, to head into the final frame 56-55 Vikes.

Things looked to be going the Vikes way in the fourth quarter as they held a 7 point lead withsix minutes to play but the Wolfpack's leading scorer Justin King poured in 4 straight free throws to tie the game at 72-72 with 35.4 seconds left to play.

The Vikes went back on top after Andrus nailed a 3 pointer but the Wolfpack wouldn't go away. King tied it back up again when he drained a shot from the top of the key then added a free throw for being fouled on the play. King was 14-15 from the line on the night.

The Vikes got the ball to McKinnon who launched a 3 point attempt that was off the mark, Andrus scooped in and grabbed the rebound and layed it in for the victory.

The elated Vikes fans poured onto Ken and Kathy Shields Court to celebrate with the team as they move to 5-0 on the season and top spot in the CIS Canada West – West Division Standings.

King led all scorers with 35 points and 13 rebounds while McKinnon led the Vikes with 18 points and Andrus finished with 16.

The Vikes and Wolfpack are back at it tonight at McKinnon gym at 7:30pm.
