UVic-Logo web-(1)November 9, 2012, Langley, BC – The University of Victoria Vikes women's basketball team fell 63-49 to the Fraser Valley Cascades on the road Friday. The win improved the Cascades' Canada West record to a perfect 3-0, while the Vikes fall 2-1 in conference play.

"We got down early and fought back but didn't play well consistently enough," said Vikes associate coach Dani Sinclair. "As the No. 2 team in the country they are a difficult team to beat."

Currently ranked seventh in the country after a solid pre-season six-game win streak and taking two games last weekend from the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat, the Vikes struggled against the stellar perimeter shooting of Fraser Valley's Aiesha Luyken. Luyken was 4-4 on threes and led the Cascades with 17 points.

The Vikes did well to overcome the Cascades' 10-point lead in the first quarter with some late jumpers from Cassandra Goodis (Penticton, BC) and Jessica Renfrew (Victoria, BC). The young UVic side closed out the first quarter with a 15-3 run to enter the first break leading 20-18.

In the second quarter, both teams played stellar defense holding the offenses in check, in a quarter that saw the Cascades edge the Vikes in scoring 9-7 to end the half tied at 27-27.

Fronting most of the points for the UVic women was guard Renfrew, with a game total of 15 while fifth-year Debbie Yeboah (Winnipeg, MB) contributed an additional 13. Rookie Tessla Rennie (Red Lodge, MT) and fifth-year Chelsea McMullen (Prince George, B.C.) each put up seven rebounds while third-year Goodis led the team defensively with four steals.

The Cascades found their comfort spot in the second half, opening the third quarter with a quick six-point run to open up the largest lead of the night. The Cascades contained the speedy Vikes offence well, while shooting 50 per cent in the second half and holding the Vikes to 20 second-half points.

The Vikes' usual top scorers struggled to find the net tonight as Yeboah was four for 14 field goal attempts, while Goodis was two for nine.

The Vikes will re-group for the second match of their double-header weekend against the Cascades tomorrow, Nov. 10 at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast live at http://uvic.canadawest.tv
