The North Island Silvertips took a pair of games from the South Island Thunderbirds this past weekend in BC Hockey Major Midget action.
Victoria, BC, February 5, 2012 – Despite playing a pair of relatively decent hockey games, the losing ways continued for the South Island Thunderbirds, as they dropped a pair of BC Hockey Major Midget league games over the weekend to the North Island Silvertips by scores of 3-0 and 3-1.
On Saturday in Nanaimo, Corey Renwick, Jordan Levesque and Will McNamara were the goal scorers for the Silvertips, while Riley Medves posted the shut-out in net in the North Island’s 3-0 victory.

In the return matchup on Sunday at Bear Mountain Arena in Colwood, despite being outplayed by the Thunderbirds in the first period, the Silvertips escaped with a 1-0 lead at the break thanks to an early goal by Nicholas Gomerich and some solid goaltending by Michael Herringer, a draft pick of the WHL’s Victoria Royals.
North Island’s Michael Herringer – a Victoria Royals draft pick – was solid in net Sunday during the Silvertip’s 3-1 win.
The teams battled hard through the second period and the first half of the third, with neither team scoring until the Thunderbird’s Cole Glover would bang home a rebound to tie the game 1-1 with just over nine minutes remaining.

Unfortunately just 23 seconds into the very next shift, the Silvertips would answer back, as Hobin Zinck capitalized on a defensive miscue and sniped home a top corner shot past Thunderbird goalie Nic Reynard to put the ‘Tips back in front 2-1.

North Island would add add an insurance goal just under three minutes later as Chase Lang’s wrap-around attempt found its way past the far pad of Reynard, giving the Silvertips their third and final goal of the game.
North Island’s Chase Lang would slip this wrap around attempt past T-Bird goalie Nic Renyard for the Silvertips third goal of the game.
The losses for the last place Thunderbirds were the 22nd and 23rd on the season for the struggling squad, against just 3 wins and 6 ties. Their last win was a 5-2 win over the Kootenay Ice on October 30th. The Thunderbirds have just three ties since that game including one against the Ice most recently on January 28th, however the team has been competing well and ten of the losses since that date have been by one or two goals.
North Island’s Will McNamara, seen here in Sunday action, would score one of the Silvertip’s three goals in their Saturday 3-0 shut-out of the Thunderbirds.
For North Island, the two wins gives the Silvertips a record of 15-13-4 and their 34 points finds them in 6th place in the league, just 3 points back of the 5th place Okanagan Rockets.
The Thunderbirds have just two home games remaining on their schedule and will entertain the Thompson Blazers on Saturday February 18th at 5:00 pm at Bear Mountain Arena, with a return engagement on Sunday February 19th at 9:30 AM at Panorama Recreation Centre in Sidney.
