VICTORIA, BC – Ryan Harrison scored two goals, including his second consecutive game-winner, to lead the Everett Silvertips to a 3-2 victory over the Victoria Royals for the second straight night Wednesday at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The win brings the Silvertips to within three points of seventh place and a playoff spot in the WHL’s Western Conference standings going into Friday’s matchup with Vancouver.
In addition to Harrison’s two scores, Ryan Chynoweth netted his second goal of the year as Everett won for the fourth time in five games. Kent Simpson stopped 29 shots to win his fourth straight start in goal. With four wins on their current six-game road swing, the ‘Tips have more than doubled their previous road win total for the season.
Neither team registered a shot in the first six minutes of play, but the Silvertips eventually built a 12-5 shot advantage through 20 minutes thanks in part to two powerplay opportunities. Despite one hit post and a few other good chances, the ‘Tips weren’t able to beat Keith Hamilton as the game remained scoreless after one.
Victoria opened the scoring early in the second on the powerplay when Jamie Crooks deposited the rebound of Hayden Rintoul’s point shot at 2:16. Everett evened things up six minutes later with some nice work low in the offensive zone. Cody Fowlie delivered a hit and got the puck into the circle for Kohl Bauml, who sent it out front to be tapped in by Ryan Harrison. The ‘Tips then took the lead with five minutes left in the period when a Ryan Murray point blast was deflected off the end boards and popped right back out front, where Ryan Chynoweth stuffed it past by Hamilton on his backhand to put the Silvertips on top 2-1 after two.
The Royals tied it at two early in the third when Dakota Conroy finished off a give-and-go with Rintoul at 4:47. Harrison then came up with another key play midway through the period to put Everett back on top 3-2, skating down the right boards and cutting into the slot before rifling a shot top-corner for his 16th goal of the season. The Silvertips killed off a Victoria powerplay with less than six minutes left and held off the Royals to win 3-2 for the second consecutive game.
Kent Simpson (12-24-1-5) made 29 saves for the second night in a row as well as Victoria outshot the ‘Tips 31-29. Keith Hamilton (16-28-1-0) suffered his league-most 28th loss of the year with a 26-save effort. Everett went scoreless on three powerplay chances, while Victoria was 1 for 2.
