Victoria (ISN) – UVic guard Ryan MacKinnon has been honoured as the Canada West Athlete of the week for his 23-point effort against UBC last Friday.
On graduating players night, fifth-year senior guard Ryan MacKinnon drained the game-winning shot to help the CIS #6-ranked UVic Vikes defeat the #5 UBC Thunderbirds 90-83 to clinch first place in the Canada West’s Pacific Division.
The win snapped an 11-game losing skid against UBC for the Vikes. In his final regular season home contest, MacKinnon hit five three-pointers, all in the second half, including his 200th career long-bomb for the Vikes. He finished Friday night’s season finale with 23 points along with five assists, four steals and four rebounds.
The Comox, B.C., native finishes third in the Canada West in points per game, averaging 19.9 a contest. He also led the Canada West in made three-pointers, draining 55 this season for 165 of his team-high 358 points.
The Vikes now prepare to host the red-hot Calgary Dinos in the best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series beginning Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. at McKinnon Gymnasium. Game 2 goes Saturday Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. and Game 3, if necessary, will be played on Sunday Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.
