(FREDERICTON, N.B.) This week’s UNB Varsity Reds and Domino’s Pizza Athletes of the Week are David Shantz from the men’s hockey team and Lauren Joyce from the women’s volleyball team.
4th Year, Arts
Shantz posted a record of 3-0 in net for the Varsity Reds this week in three tough games against STU, StFX and SMU. Shantz made 72 saves on 74 shots on goal for a .973 save percentage and a GAA of .67 over the three games.
“David was fantastic this past week as you can see by his numbers,” said UNB head coach Gardiner MacDougall. “He is a professional in every aspect of his game and it’s nice to see him get rewarded.”
“The way he approaches his games and practices is the reason he is having success. It was a tough week on the schedule and he played three teams with very high-powered offence. He rose to the challenge in all three.

Joyce was a rock as UNB handed the Saint Mary’s Huskies their first loss to an AUS team this season. The second-year Kinesiology student had 13 kills and six blocks on the way to the V-Reds five set win.
“Lauren had another solid match for us on Sunday,” said UNB head coach Jilliane Goulet.
“She did a great job on both side of the ball, attacking efficiently and closing the block well. She played a big part in our win against SMU.”
