(ISN) – VICTORIA, B.C. – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball program and head coach Dani Sinclair are pleased to announce the addition of local basketball product, Marissa Dheensaw, for the 2015-16 varsity season.

The five-foot-ten forward of Claremont Secondary began playing basketball in Grade 4 and was a long-time crowd supporter of the Vikes while growing up. That, combined with the experience of watching her sister play for Team BC and Team Canada before her, intrigued Dheensaw to do the same.

“Marissa will help us greatly in some much-needed areas as she is an exceptional rebounder and can defend all five positions on the floor,” said Sinclair.

Both Sinclair and Dheensaw are familiar with each other as Sinclair was the head coach of Dheensaw’s Under 15 B.C. team that captured bronze at the national championship in 2012.

Among her list of team achievements, seventeen-year-old Dheensaw boasts a silver and gold medal at the Canada Summer Games in 2013 and in 2014, respectively.

“I can’t wait to play for my own city,” said the Victoria native. “Having Dani as a coach in previous years makes me excited to start a new journey with her and my future teammates.”

Dheensaw’s performances have led her to being nominated as the female athlete of the year in Grades 9-11 at Claremont and was honoured with the top 15 All BC High School Girls basketball award in 2013-14.

For three-consecutive years, Dheensaw has been named to the Island Championship First Team All-Star and she has also been awarded as an MVP in soccer, basketball and volleyball in those years. Last year, she was also invited to the Under 16 cadette national team tryouts.

In the next academic year, Dheensaw intends to enroll in the social sciences program at UVic.

“It is important for us to attract the best local talent to our program, and Marissa has the ability to be a very importance piece of the puzzle moving forward. Marissa is a tremendous competitor and I am very excited to have the opportunity to coach her once again,” added Sinclair.
