Parksville, BC (March 6, 2017) – The Kimberley rink of Tom and Lori Buchy and Dave and Robyn Toffolo will be given the opportunity to fight for a national title for the fourth time.
The Mixed team lost only one game on their way to a gold medal at the 2017 AMJ Campbell BC Mixed Curling Championship, which took place at Parksville Curling Club. Action wrapped up on Sunday (March 5).
Team Buchy will represent BC at the 2018 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, which will be played at the Swan River Curling Club in Manitoba, Nov. 12-18, 2017.
The team won the BC Mixed title in 2006, 2010 and 2012. But they have never won a national title.
The provincial gold medal game, against Richmond Curling Club’s Team Watson, was a rematch of the page 1 vs 2 playoffs, which went the other way – with Team Watson winning 6-4 and getting a bye to the final.
But after Team Buchy dispatched Team Shimizu in the semi-final, winning a decisive 8-2 victory, they went on to avenge their playoff defeat to Team Watson. Deuces in the second, fourth and seventh ends helped them on their way to a 6-3 victory.
There will be lots of hardware to show off at Richmond Curling Club this week. Team Watson, skipped by Aaron Watson, third Jaime McLaren, second Chris Chute and lead Heather Hansen took home the silver medals. Team Shimizu, featuring Vic and Kelly Shimizu, Trevor Bakken and Laurie Shimizu took home the bronze.
Team Baier, from Victoria Curling Centre, Team Forrest, from Vancouver and Richmond curling clubs, Team Roemer, from Delta Thistle Curling Club, Team Groundwater, from Williams Lake Curling Club and Team Longworth, from Vernon Curling Club were the other participating teams.
