VICTORIA – A span of two tournaments in just five days is over for a UVic Vikes women’s golf that finished off their opening weekend of the season with an eighth place finish in the Western Washington Invitational.

For the second tournament in a row the Vikes were the model of consistency as a team. An opening round of 322 was good enough for seventh before the team shot 323 on day two for an overall total of 645 and a spot in eighth place. The race for sixth was a tight one as the Vikes finished just one shot back of Simon Fraser University and four behind the host Western Washington Vikings.

Second-year Vike Rhiannon Jones led the way individually for the team. Her final round of 77 was the best from any Vike in the tournament, helping her to a tie for 21st overall.

Melanie MurchisonCadence Hellmann and Nicole Gargarella ended the tournament just three strokes apart as Murchison finished tied for 28th, Hellmann tied for 32nd and Gargarella in a tie for 37th.

Hannah Diamond rounded out the scoring for the team with a two day total of 177 putting her in a tie for 60th place.

The Vikes are next in action in the friendly confines of the Cordova Bay Golf Course for the annual Vikes shootout. That tournament runs from October 16-17.
