Victoria, BC: One of the world’s best roller dancers — Skate Lisa — will be teaching Vancouver Island roller skaters the tricks of the trade this Monday (November 12) at the Royal Roads University Recreation Centre in Colwood.
The UK native who trains in Venice Beach, California and has been performing and teaching all over the world for decades, will be teaching lessons to all levels of skaters at the event hosted by Roller Skate Victoria Dance Academy — a roller dance school that formed this year in response to the resurgence in popularity of roller skating around the globe.
Skate Lisa, who is known for her unique freestyle brand of skating, says the idea to visit was motivated by her noticing more and more Canadian roller dancers appearing in videos online.
“I saw a lot of videos and so many enthusiastic skaters that I knew I had to come and steer them all in the right direction!”
Roller Skate Victoria Co-owner Martin Newham says Skate Lisa’s visit is very exciting for the Victoria roller dance community.
“We have been working hard to bring roller dancing back to the Capital Region and the fact someone of Skate Lisa’s calibre has taken notice of that tells us we are on track! It is an incredible opportunity for our skaters to learn from one of the best”
In addition to the event in Victoria, Skate Lisa will also be stopping in Vancouver and Calgary with sessions hosted by Rollerskate Vancouver on November 13 and Calgary Rollerskate on November 18.
Victoria’s beginner session starts at 12:30 and the intermediate / advanced session begins at 2:15. Roller Skate Victoria will provide free rentals with advanced notice of size. For more information and to purchase tickets visit the event page.
