Team Daniels started off the new year by claiming the 2019 BC Junior Women’s Curling Championship with 10-4 victory over defending champions Team Reese-Hansen at Vernon Curling Club.
The two teams, who also played each other in the 2018 BC Junior Women’s final, exchanged points back and forth through the first four ends, with Delta Thistle’s Team Daniels (Sarah Daniels, Kayla MacMillan, Jessica Humphries, Sarah Loken) scoring doubles in the fifth and sixth ends to take a 7-2 lead.
Victoria’s Team Reese-Hansen (Taylor Reese-Hansen, Catera Park, Jordan Koster, Sydney Brilz) worked hard to try to even the score, taking singles in the seventh and eighth ends to tighten Team Daniels’ lead to 7-4.
However, Team Daniels secured their 10-4 win with some big shots in the ninth end to score three more points.
“[I’m] speechless. I still feel as amazed and as happy as the first time that this happened,” said Daniels, who won the 2014 BC Juniors with Team Van Osch and the 2016 BC Juniors as her team’s skip. ”The team has worked so hard over the past couple of years and we’re really happy that that showed out on the ice today.”
Daniels has silver medals from both her 2014 and 2016 Canadian Junior Curling Championship appearances, and her team will be looking to make it back onto the podium when they represent BC at the 2019 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, which are taking place January 19 to 27 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
“I’ve been dying to get back. The Canadian Juniors is always so much fun,” said Daniels. “I just can’t wait.”
