The Canadian Hockey League today announced the week twenty edition of the Kia CHL Top-10 Rankings for the 2018-19 season. The weekly rankings of the CHL’s Top-10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.
Despite being the first team in the Western Hockey League to clinch a playoff spot, the Prince Albert Raiders dropped to the second spot on the Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings. This came after a 2-1 record this week that saw them split a pair of games against the Edmonton Oil Kings and claim another win against the Moose Jaw Warriors. With an 8-1-0-1 record in their past 10 road games, the Raiders will look to continue their road success Friday, February 8 (7:00 p.m. MT) at the Stampede Corral against the Calgary Wranglers (Hitmen).
Holding steady in the seventh spot for another week were the Everett Silvertips, who continued to lead the U.S. Division and WHL’s Western Conference. The Silvertips extended their winning streak to four games with a home-and-home sweep of the Seattle Thunderbirds, earning a 5-2 win on the road Friday and a 7-2 victory at home Saturday. A six-point performance on Saturday by captain Connor Dewar (Minnesota Wild) earned WHL On the Run Player of the Week honours for the Manitoba product. The Silvertips will continue their four-game home stand this weekend as they welcome the Medicine Hat Tigers to Angel of the Winds Arena on Friday, February 8 (7:35 p.m. PT).
Earning honourable mentions this week were the Vancouver Giants and Saskatoon Blades.
The Giants went 3-1 over the week, winning a pair of games against the Prince George Cougars, beating the Kamloops Blazers in overtime, and losing to the Portland Winterhawks. With an 18-point lead in the B.C. Division, the Giants are well on their way to capturing their first division title since 2010. Vancouver is back in action Wednesday, February 6 (7:00 p.m. PT), closing out a mid-week two-game set against the Cougars at the CN Centre.
For the Blades, their week saw them earn five of a possible six points from their three games, earning wins over the Regina Pats and Brandon Wheat Kings while suffering their lone loss in overtime to the Oil Kings. Gary Haden’s strong 2019 has been more noticeable of late with him recording 13 points (9G-4A) in his last five games. Additionally, Haden has 23 points (11G-12A) in 14 games to lead the Blades in scoring through the 2019 calendar year. Up next for Saskatoon is a meeting with the Moose Jaw Warriors at home Wednesday, February 6 (7:00 p.m. CT).
