After a tough semi-final loss on Friday the Douglas Royals still have an opportunity for a national bronze medal but the day will begin early for the PACWEST silver medalists. The Royals will face the Briercrest Clippers on Saturday morning at 7:00 PST.
Friday the Royals fell short in their semi-final losing in four sets to The King’s University Eagles out of Edmonton. Offensively Vania Oliveira was again brilliant with 20 kills, eight digs and a block and was named Player of the Match. Caet McCorkell added eight kills and 12 digs and setter Jane Kepler had 36 assists.
With the loss the Royals cross over to the other side of the bracket and now have their eyes set on bronze.
The first step towards that bronze medal is a bronze semi-final where they will face the Clippers. On Friday the ACAC wildcard entry shutout the host Niagara Knights 3-0 to punch their ticket to the bronze quarterfinal. In their first match of the tournament the Clippers lost their quarterfinal on Thursday in five sets to the Cavaliers de Bois-de-Boulogne out of the RSEQ.
The Royals will need to watch Becky Garner on the offensive side. She has tallied 31 kills to lead the way through the first two matches. Mikayla Benterud has also been a threat with 15 kills in the tournament.
If the Royals can claim a victory Saturday morning they will play for the CCAA bronze at 3:00pm PST. If they lose to the Clippers the season will come to a close.
