A Victoria team featuring Junior Men’s World Champion Alex Horvath has won the 2019 AMJ Campbell BC Mixed Curling Championship.

The championship took place at Vancouver Curling Club from April 11 until today (Sunday, April 14).

Horvath was part of the Tardi team that won the World Junior Men’s Curling Championship in Nova Scotia earlier this season.

The team was skipped by former BC Junior Men’s champion Cameron de Jong and also featured former BC Junior Women’s champion Taylor Reese-Hansen. The team was rounded out by Mariah Coulombe.

The final featured Team de Jong and Team Daniels, from Delta Thistle Curling Club.

Team Daniels qualified through the A Event of the triple-knockout draw, then went on to beat Kimberley’s Team Buchy, the B Event qualifiers, in the Page Playoff, winning a bye to the final.

Team de Jong, who had qualified through the C Event, knocked out the Okanagan’s Team Tolley, then went on to beat Team Buchy in the semis this morning. The Buchy rink, with father-daughter duos Tom and Kaila Buchy and Dave and Arissa Toffolo, were awarded the bronze medal.

In the final, the teams traded single points or blanked ends until the fifth end when de Jong was able to score three. Daniels replied with one in the sixth and a steal of one in the seventh – leaving de Jong leading 4-3 with hammer in the eighth and final end. The teams shook hands when Daniels ran out of rocks.

Daniels, a three-time BC junior champion and three-time silver medallist at Junior nationals, was awarded a silver medal. Her team also featured third Brayden Carpenter and lead John Cullen, as well as Sarah Loken who recently won Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association curling nationals with her Douglas College rink.

Team de Jong will advance to the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship  November 4-9 in Saguenay, Quebec.
