Canada’s National Para Hockey Team will be headed back to the Maritimes in 2020 to compete against the world’s best at the Canadian Tire Para Hockey Cup in Bridgewater, N.S.

The event, which was re-branded from the World Sledge Hockey Challenge in 2018, marks the second time the world’s top para teams will gather at the Lunenburg Country Lifestyle Centre; Bridgewater previously hosted in 2016.

“Bridgewater has proven it supports our athletes, and the 2020 Canadian Tire Para Hockey Cup is a fantastic opportunity to showcase that passion again,” said Tom Renney, chief executive officer of Hockey Canada. “Hockey Canada is very excited to be able to share this great sport with the community for a second time.”

“We are incredibly proud that Hockey Canada has chosen to come to the LCLC and to Lunenburg County once again,” said Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, mayor of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg. “It is an honour to be selected and it speaks volumes about the kind of event we were able to put on in 2016 and the support the tournament received from our community.”

“Not only are we going to see tremendous para hockey on the ice, but this is the kind of event that has a significant impact on our community as a whole,” said Bridgewater Mayor David Mitchell. “The economic impact of hosting the 2020 Canadian Tire Para Hockey Cup is estimated at more than $1 million and Hockey Canada also makes a legacy contribution, giving back a portion of net proceeds to local minor and para hockey programs here.”

This will be the third Hockey Canada event Bridgewater has hosted in recent years; in addition to the 2016 World Sledge Hockey Challenge, it also welcomed the Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, in 2018.
