Victoria Highlanders FC are pleased to announce the signing of Jake Ruby, pending USL League and BC Soccer approval. The 18-year-old will join Thomas Niendorf’s USL League Two side as the first defender signed.
Primarily a right back, Ruby has experience with the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency Program, as well as with the U-17 Canadian National Team. He made three appearances representing the nation at the CONCACAF U-17 championships in Panama – starting each of the Canadian squad’s games. Ruby also spent a couple seasons with Mountain United FC of the BC Soccer Premier League.
“He is a player that has gone through the Canadian youth national program and the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency program. He has a very good background and as a young player has a lot of potential,” added Niendorf. “I like his attitude, his personality, he’s a very coachable young man. I like his application of the game and he plays the game properly. I’m looking forward to seeing him develop as a person and as a player.”
Born and raised in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Ruby became an integral part in the Whitecaps U-16 side in the 2016/17 season, making 26 appearances and helping the team qualify for the playoffs. He started all three games in the playoffs as they made their way to a Final Four finish. The fullback’s willingness to join the attack and ability to pressure in one-on-one situations provided him the opportunity to take part in training sessions with the Whitecaps’ First Team in 2018.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to play with university caliber players. I’m one of the younger guys so I’m excited to be playing and learning from the players on the Island,” stated Ruby. “I’m looking forward to the USL League Two season and I think it’s going to be a very good season for the Highlanders.”
Welcome to the Capital, Jake!
