A pair of Saskatchewan Huskies took the next step in their journey towards fulfilling their football dreams after they were selected in the 2019 Canadian Football League on Thursday, May 2.
Evan Machibroda was the first Huskie off the board when he was selected by the Edmonton Eskimos with the 41st overall pick in the fifth round.
A defensive lineman from Saskatoon, Machibroda was sitting in the Huskies clubhouse with some teammates when he found out he had been drafted.
“It feels great, that was a lot of hard work coming to a close and now there’s a great opportunity on the horizon,” said Machibroda.
The engineering student plans to attend camp with the Eskimos, but his attention hasn’t shifted from the task at hand, preparing alongside his reigning Hardy Cup champion teammates at the Huskies Spring Camp.
“At this point it’s spring camp for us and that’s my focus right now,” said Machibroda.
Machibroda was a standout all season long for the Huskies, often fighting through double-teams in the interior of the defensive line to record three sacks and 14 tackles in the regular season, before adding one sack and nine tackles in three postseason games.
Also chosen in the draft was Ben Whiting. Selected with the 57th overall pick in the seventh round by the Montreal Alouettes, Whiting is the first Huskies linebacker drafted into the CFL since 1989.
The education major put up 44 tackles in the regular season and 22 more in the playoffs.
Machibroda and Whiting are now the first defensive members of the Huskies selected in the draft since 2016 and raise the total to 15 members of the prestigious program taken in the last 10 drafts.
