Vancouver Island FC Played Seattle Sounders this weekend and came out with a result 2-1 on the road!! Here is the question and answer from the interview.
Questions from: Thomas Clarke at the WPSL
Answers from: Wesley Barrett, Co Head Coach of Vancouver Island FC
How’s impressed are you with the team’s performance ?
I would say that both teams had good performances on the day. Soccer is a funny game in that way, that you can feel as if you played extremely well and come out on the wrong end of a result. The game was back and forth, Seattle had their chances and our goalies made some big saves and big moments. We had our chances and Seattle’s goalie came up big as well. It was a fun game to watch for the fans I am sure. After going up in the game, the girls stayed organized and kept things compact from back to front, every player made an impact and played a role in the game in some way, a great team performance over all.
What are your collective goals for the season?
One of our big hopes and reasons for creating this team on the island is to give female soccer players a positive high level soccer experience in the summer months. We have not had high level soccer on the Island in the summer for many years and this league and this team is helping to fill that gap. We also are hoping to create excitement and soccer buzz on the island for local young females and families. Getting young players exited about the game and this team is a top priority for us and we are starting to get that.
How big of a lift does a come from behind win over the defending league champions give the team?
Coming back from 1-0 down in any game, away from home, against a top team, is always a great feeling for players. I believe it was no more then 3-5 minutes after we conceded that Natalie Cavallin scored. She took a ball on her left foot and struck it really well from about 18 years out across the face of goal to the bottom goalie, the Seattle goalie (a 6 foot, talented goal keeper) extended out for it, but jut couldn’t reach it. A great finish and the girls felt great about it.
Describe the goals that were scored.
The winning goal came from Liz Gregg, She got in behind the back line on a bit of a counter attack from us after we won a ball in midfield. She is a lefty but got around the goalie and slotted it home with her right foot. Another quality finish.
