Last weekend June 8 & 9 was the Victoria Memorial Mixed Doubles horseshoe tournament held in Victoria at Glanford park. Ladysmith 84 yr old Roland Loiselle teamed up with Shelley Evans from Sooke to capture the Championship.
Roland and Shelley both have only been playing competitive horseshoes for a few yrs. but they took on all challengers to come out on top. The tournament had 25 teams with 4 divisions and top 2 teams from 2 days of round robin play entered the single knockout format for the Championship. Each team could not have a combined ringer % entry of more than 70%.
During the finals against Victoria’s Kevin Cuthbert and Ladysmith’s Vince Herkel , it was machine-like accuracy of Roland that made the difference. Roland shot 70.83% for the final win. Roland shot a combined 55% for the round robin portion of the tournament for a combined 9-2 record with his teammate Shelley.
Along with the 25 teams each day had 5 Juniors and peewee players.
Next up is the GVHPA Open July 13 and the Saanich Open July 14 at the Glanford park courts.
If you have never witnessed competitive horseshoe pitching, come out and see some excellent players in action.
7 players from Vancouver Island will be heading to Wichita Falls, Texas in late July to play in the World Horseshoe Pitching Championships.
