Kelvin Leerdam scored the winner in the sixth minute of added time after a relentless effort by the ‘Caps.

Playing the last game in a three-match, eight-day stretch, head coach Marc Dos Santos shook things up with a 4-4-2 diamond formation, bringing Jake Nerwinski and Victor ‘PC’ Giro in as the two changes from Wednesday’s 2-2 draw in Dallas.

The ‘Caps looked like they might get a repeat of Yordy Reyna’s Goal of the Week, when the striker won a free kick from thirty-yards out in the last minutes of the first half. Montero lined up for the long chance that found the target, but Sounders FC goalkeeper Stefan Frei was in position to keep it out.

The second half started strong with Reyna being the conductor of multiple scoring opportunities. However, Seattle’s Danny Leyva was the first one to find the back of the net in the 62nd minute. His open net strike happened as goalkeeper Zac MacMath was injured on the ground following a collision with Seattle striker Justin Dhillon. After Video Review, the goal was overturned for a foul on Dhillon to keep the match 0-0.

There were no shortage of chances during the rest of the match, with Reyna, Montero, Lucas Venuto, Ali Adnan, and Inbeom Hwang all contributing to the twelve shots on the night for the ‘Caps.

It would all come to an end in the sixth minute of added time. Leerdam took one touch in the box and found the back of the net off a centering pass from Brad Smith, to close the match out in a 1-0 loss for the ‘Caps.

Whitecaps FC continue their road stretch next Saturday, July 6 when they visit LAFC. Kickoff at Banc of California is at 7:30 p.m. PT live on TSN2 and TSN 1410 Radio. The ‘Caps then look towards their first Canadian Championship match-up on Wednesday, July 10 against Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC at Calgary’s Spruce Meadows.
