Canada’s Pan Am Games women’s team fell to host Peru 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18) Wednesday evening in the tournament opener in front of a packed house in Lima, Peru.

“I thought each set, except for the last set, we started off pretty strong – we played with them until 15. But then we had a lot of unforced errors in the last part of the match, and that really let us down,” said Canada’s head coach Shannon Winzer.

“Peru were excellent defensively. … Our middles did a fantastic job today, scoring and blocking, but we’ve got to have more of an offensive force than that.”

Peru excelled in service points (16-4), while Canada dominated in blocking points (17-3).

Captain Brianna Beamish had 14 points for Canada; followed by Layne Van Buskirk with 13.  Angela Leyva and Karla Ortiz led Peru’s scoring with 17 and 16 points respectively. Peruvian middle blocker Maricarmen Guerrero had six aces.

Canada’s next Group A match is Aug. 08 against Dominican Republic at 6:30 pm local time.
