Former UBC Thunderbird standout is first football student-athlete inducted

EDMONTON – Record-setting UBC defensive back Mark Norman is the first Thunderbird to enter the Canada West Hall of Fame.

The football standout was inducted into the conference’s Hall of Fame on Thursday, becoming the first football student-athlete to be honoured.

One football inductee will be honoured every Thursday by the conference during the 2019 conference football season, as part of Canada West’s year-long celebration of 100 years of university sport in Western Canada.

Between 1983 and 1986 Norman rewrote the Western Intercollegiate Football League (WIFL) record book, establishing new marks for most interceptions returned for touchdowns in a season (5) and career (6); most interception return yards in a season (451) and career (514); and most interceptions in a season (13).

Along with his personal success, Norman was also key in UBC’s 1986 Vanier Cup championship win.

Following his university career, Norman found more team success at the professional level, playing five years in the Canadian Football League, including a Grey Cup win in 1987 as a rookie with the Edmonton Eskimos.
