Trinity Western’s men’s rugby team will host the Spartan 7s tournament this Friday at the Langley Events Centre’s NorthWest Field, marking the first time TWU has ever hosted a rugby sevens event.
The Spartan 7s, which will feature UBC, the University of Victoria, UBC Okanagan and TWU, will act a BC zone qualifier for the Canadian University Rugby Sevens Championship tournament next March. With UBC set to host the national tournament Mar. 6, 2020, the second of two qualifying spots for B.C. will go to the highest finisher (besides UBC) at this weekend’s Spartan 7s.
The tournament will feature a round robin, with points (3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 1 point for a loss) accumulated determining the tournament champion and final standings.
The Spartans re-launched the rugby program this season to great success, opening the year by winning the Viking 10s tournament at the Western Washington University, before finishing as the Shield Champions at the WestCoast 7s in San Francisco, going 3-3 in six games, and then winning their first 15s game of the year, beating UBC Okanagan 43-20 last Saturday.
