Over a 22-year run as women’s basketball head coach at the University of Victoria, Kathy Shields guided her teams to 14 Canada West titles and eight national championships, while compiling 320 regular season wins.
The UVic legend was announced as the latest CW Hall of Fame inductee Friday, as the conference’s campaign to honour 100 years of university sport in Western Canada continued.
Shields was twice-named CIAU Coach of the Year and received the Canada West Coach of the Year award nine times.
Her coaching legacy extends far past her own career, as eight of her former athletes and assistant coaches went on to be head coaches of university teams.
From 1981 to 1994, Shields worked on the coaching staff of many Canadian national women’s teams including at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
