The 2020 Vancouver Sevens Invitational (VSI) is set to take place at UBC’s Gerald McGavin Rugby Centre on March 5-6, bringing together some of the best young Rugby Sevens talent from across Canada and beyond. The two-day tournament will be attended by some 49 teams across 6 divisions, creating the perfect grass-roots build-up to the HSBC Canada Sevens tournament being held at BC Place this weekend.
This year’s VSI is once again headlined by the Senior Male and Female divisions, featuring university, academy and club teams full of some of the most promising athletes in the country. Completing the line-up, the U18 and U16 divisions continue to give meaningful competition to many exciting prospects from BC and other Provinces.
BC Rugby’s NextGen Sevens and Elite Youth Sevens programs have contributed a total of 13 teams to the competition, ensuring that home fans will have plenty to cheer about at almost every stage of the tournament. Facing them are sides from Washington, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Alberta along with BC university and club sides, making for a rich schedule packed with potential.
The BC Rugby NextGen Men’s Team, champions in the last two years at the event, will return to defend their title in a highly competitive Senior MEn’s Division while UBC Thunderbirds will aim to defend their 2019 title in the Senior Women’s Division. U18 Teams from the BC Rugby Elite Youth Sevens Boys’ and Girls Programs have already been in action this year at the Western Canadian Sevens Championships in Edmonton in February. The BC Elite Girls’ Team were crowned champions in a scintillating final while boys’ teams from the Island, Mainland, Valley and Interior put in some impressive performances. Now they are joined by U16 teams in this competition, hoping to showcase some emerging talent in the youngest divisions To see the rosters for all BC teams in this year’s competition, click here.
