Finalists – Men’s Sports
Imoudo Ibrahim (basketball)
- The 6’6″ forward and graduate of Calgary’s Edge School proved hard to handle for the opposition all season long, appearing in every regular season game for the Heat, including 12 starts.
- Ferocious on the glass, this Management student finished 6th in the Canada West conference with 52 offensive boards.
- Averaging 6.1 points along with his 5.2 boards per game for the Heat, Imoudo demonstrated a scorer’s touch, dropping 15 points on two occasions to go along with two double-double games in his rookie campaign.
Ben Magel (volleyball)
- The product of George Elliot Secondary School in Lake Country, BC, this first-year libero’s role steadily increased over the course of the past season.
- Coming off the bench in 12 matches, he topped all Heat rookies in digs per game.
- The Engineering student makes a significant contribution off the court as well with his community work, volunteering for numerous organizations and initiatives, including Athletes in Action, Christian Life Assembly, Parkinson’s Superwalk, among many others.
Pierson Stanley (soccer)
- The speedy forward from West Vancouver Secondary scored his first-career Canada West goal on September 13, the game-winner against MacEwan.
- Playing in 13 of the team’s 16 games, with 8 starts, this Management student was a growing threat for opposing goal keepers.
- Pierson played his way onto the Canada West All-Rookie team with his strong season on the UBCO frontline.
Patrick Dujmovic (basketball)
- Over his four seasons in a Heat uniform, the biochemistry major played in 55 games.
- The product of White Rock, BC, Patrick saved his best for last, finishing his Heat career in fine fashion in 2019-20, shooting 40% from beyond the arc and 100% from the charity stripe.
Michael Mitchell (cross country)
- The two-time Canada West All-Star from Kimberly, BC, also won two individual titles in his time with the Heat.
- A four-time CCAA National Scholar / USPORTS Academic All Canadian, the three-year team-captain and Engineering graduate has been a leader in the classroom, in training, and on race day.
- Mike was the top Heat runner across the line in every race he competed over the past three years, including two trips to the USPORTS National Championship in 2018 and 2019.
Denham O’Reilly (volleyball)
- The most versatile player on the team and another leader on and off the court, the Langley, BC, product played four different positions in his time with the Heat.
- Transitioning from a setter this past season, the Arts student led the Heat squad with 154 digs, or 2.2 per set, establishing him with the second-best average in the Canada West conference.
- But defense was not his only strong suit, while as a hitter, he averaged three kills per set over his final six games, including a career-best 20 kill performance in a win over MacEwan, and accounting for just under 20% of the team’s kills over the course of the season.
Oliver Rizun (golf)
- The tall right-hander from Squamish, BC, played in 20 of a possible 21 tournaments in his five years with the Heat, picking up three PACWEST medals, along with a CCAA Silver medal back in 2017-18.
- Arguably the individual highlight of his career was back in 2017, when he aced the par-4 8th hole at the Okanagan Golf Club in tournament play, en route to a round of 67 (-5).
- Ollie, who will soon graduate with his Human Kinetics degree, also helped contribute to the team’s National Championship qualification this past season, the inaugural season for the program in Canada West conference competition.
Hamish Walde (soccer)
- A two-time first team Canada West All-Star, Hamish has been a cornerstone of the Heat’s defensive line over the past five seasons.
- A veteran of 63 games, he finished his university career with an impressive seven goals, including two game-winners, an impressive stat line for a defender.
- The Salt Spring Island, BC, product also served as the team’s captain over this past season while earning his Engineering degree.
Michael Mitchell (cross country)
- Mike finished as the top Heat runner in every event he competed in this season.
- On pace to graduate from the Faculty of Applied Science with his degree in Engineering this spring, Mike’s best individual result was a fifth-place finish at the Sled Dog Invitational in Saskatoon.
- Finishing in 14th position at the Canada West Championship, Mike earned 2nd team conference all-star recognition.
Hafith Moallin (basketball)
- The reigning UBCO male rookie of the year continued to impress into his second full season.
- On the court for all 20 games, the second-year Arts student led the team in the triple-crown categories of points, assists, and rebounds.
- Averaging 12.5 p/g., 4.2 a/g., and 6.2 r/g, the Mississuaga born Moallin also dropped UBCO’s second-ever triple-double in a Heat win over TRU this season, finishing the game with an impressive 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists stat line.
Denham O’Reilly (volleyball)
- A jack of all trades, Denham ranked 3rd on the Heat in kills (133), first in digs (154), and third in aces (22).
- His top performance of the season came against MacEwan when he lit up the Griffins’ to the tune of 20 kills and 18 digs and 4 aces in a five-set victory.
- Even playing part-time as a libero, the Psychology major still managed to finish second on the team in blocks with 38.
Hamish Walde (soccer)
- Hamish captained the team to its best regular season record in Canada West play, narrowly missing out on the playoffs by a single point.
- Helping lead the team to its most wins in Canada West play, including the team’s first ever victory against sister school UBC (a 2-nil win), the engineering student also earned academic accolades and recognition as a USPORTS Academic All-Canadian.
- A stalwart defender and team leader both on and off the pitch, Hamish was named a Canada West first team all-star this past season, becoming the first Heat athlete across all sports to be a two-time Canada West first-team all-star.
Cole Wilson (golf)
- In his first-ever tournament for the Heat, the Kelowna product brought home the University of Alberta Invitational Individual title and along with his teammates secured the team title as well.
- His 71.8 scoring average was the best of the Heat squad this season.
- The Management student was a key member of the Heat golf team that for the first time ever qualified for the Canadian University/College Golf Championships.
Finalists – Women’s Sports
Abigail Dueck (volleyball)
- Playing in 22 of the team’s 24 matches, the Winnipeg product led all Canada West rookies in assists with 269 and was named to the Canada West all-rookie squad.
- As the season progressed, so did the play of this Vincent Massey Collegiate graduate, making all eight of her starts in the final 11 games of the season.
- The Science student had her best score line back in January with 37 assists, seven digs, and a block that helped deliver the Heat a four-set victory over her hometown Winnipeg Wesmen.
Kelsey Falk (basketball)
- A versatile player out of Vernon Secondary School, she saw the court in all 20 games, including 19 starts, averaging 7.5 points and 7.9 boards a game.
- The science student was a force to be reckoned with around the glass, her 158 rebounds ranked her 10th overall in the Canada West conference and was good for second best in the nation among all U SPORTS rookies.
- She complemented her rebounding game with some timely scoring throughout the season, recording two double-doubles, including a 16 point, 10 rebound outing in the team’s first-ever victory over the Vikes.
Jaeli Ibbetson (basketball)
- Despite missing 8 games with a broken hand, the local Kelowna Secondary product was named to the 2020 Canada West All-Rookie team.
- An offensive force and rebounding machine, the forward averaged 13.8 points a contest along with 10.2 rebounds a game, making her the Heat’s highest scoring rookie all-time in Canada West play and only the second women’s player to average a double-double over an entire season.
- This science student at UBCO averaged 10.2 boards per game, tops among all rookies across the nation in USPORTS, with her offensive rebounding line leading all players, rookies and veterans, across the country.
Catriona McFadden (soccer)
- Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, the rookie mid-fielder scored her first career Canada West goal, the game-winner against UNBC back in September.
- Seeing the pitch in nine games, the human kinetics student made seven starts and as a consummate and versatile team player, she stepped up when team injuries mounted, making two starts between the pipes in goal.
- An energetic and highly skilled player, the St. Mary’s High School graduate will be looked upon to be a leader for the Heat squad into the future.
Amaya Perry (volleyball)
- Earning Rookie of the Year honours within the Canada West conference and across the country, the Catholic Central High graduate is UBCO’s first ever USPORTS Rookie of the Year.
- The Chin, Alberta product racked up a whopping 59 aces during the season, setting a new school single-season record that ranks fourth all-time in Canada West.
- As dangerous as she was from the service line, Perry, a first-year science student, finished second for the Heat this season in total kills with 227, in total attacks with 679, and in points with 304.5; her 227 kills were the top-mark amongst first-year players across the nation in USPORTS volleyball.
Claudia Corneil (volleyball)
- A team leader, on and off the court, the libero from Surrey, BC, started in every game this season while playing in every match she was eligible for the Heat over her career.
- Her 290 digs this season led the Heat in that category and the arts student’s total was good for 8th best in the conference.
- The team captain and lone 5th year player on the active roster, Corneil was the veteran voice and mentor for a young team that has produced four Canada West all-rookie team selections over the past two seasons and posted numerous victories over nationally ranked opponents.
Jordan Korol (basketball)
- Last season, the Coldstream native was UBCO’s female outstanding player of the year, becoming the first player in program history to average a double-double and the first to win one of Canada West’s major awards, the Sylvia Sweeney Award for her outstanding athletic achievement along with academic success, and community service.
- Jordan graduates this spring with her BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) as the 4th leading scorer in team history with 840 points and the leading rebounder in team history, hauling in 752 rebounds in her career.
- A four-time Academic All-Canadian, and on her way to a fifth, Jordan’s influence and success both on and off the court have set a standard of excellence that will lead the way for the program for years to come.
Camille Galloway (cross country)
- Camille’s season-opening victory in Saskatoon was UBCO’s first-ever individual title in Canada West competition.
- Returning from a two-year hiatus, the Masters of Nursing student captured her second straight victory on the season in a President’s Cup matchup against TRU.
- Her 9th place finish at the conference championship earned her Canada West second team all-star recognition before injuries kept her from competing at the USPORTS National Championship.
Jordan Korol (basketball)
- Last year’s UBCO’s Female Athlete of the Year is once again up for the award after another impressive season.
- Recording 12.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, the arts student had another impressive stat line while leading her team on and off the court.
- The 5th year standout was awarded a Conference 3rd star of the week following her final home games in a Heat uniform, which included an astounding 23 rebound game, 10 of those coming on the offensive glass which set a new team record.
Hellen Lacava (volleyball)
- In her first season with the Heat, the transfer from Brazil finished as one of only three players in the conference with more than 250 kills and 250 digs.
- Hellen averaged 2.77 kills per set and 266 overall, good for 8th best in the nation’s top conference, while also playing some incredible defense averaging 2.6 digs per set.
- The Faculty of Applied Science student was a threat from the service line all season, recording the 6th most aces in the conference with 40 and her 325.5 points led UBCO for the season and rated 5th in the conference.
Natalie Livingston (volleyball)
- Livingston was the definition of versatility again this season as the outside hitter shared in the setting duties while making her presence felt both offensively and defensively.
- A presence on the court every match, the UBCO sciences student became the first player in the conference since 2011/12, and the first Heat player ever, to have more than 500 assists (526) and 100 kills (106) in a Canada West season.
- Her 91 blocks, and 14 of the solo variety, were tops on the team and 5th and 4th best in the conference respectively.
Amaya Perry (volleyball)
- The U SPORTS Rookie of the Year set school marks in terms of kills (227) for a first-year player and the science student set the school record – regardless of year – in service aces (59).
- Perry’s 59 service aces are also the 4th most in Canada West history, and most ever by a rookie.
- As dangerous as she was from the service line, Perry finished second for the Heat this season in total kills with 227, in total attacks with 679, and in points with 304.5; her 227 kills were the top-mark amongst first-year players across the nation in USPORTS volleyball.
