Camosun College President Sherri Bell has issued this statement following today’s announcement by the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) to cancel the 2020/21 athletic season.

The news follows last month’s announcement by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) to cancel all winter CCAA Championships due to a number of COVID-19 related issues.

The decision impacts Camosun’s five varsity sport programs, which include men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, and men’s golf.

“While the PACWEST’s decision to cancel the season comes as no surprise, it is still so disappointing for our athletes.

“We will continue to support our athletes on every possible level, and stand by our commitment to prioritize the health and safety of the college community which includes our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans.

“The college will continue monitoring COVID-19 recovery plans and follow guidance from the Provincial Health Officer and the B.C. government, as well as the PACWEST and CCAA, for a safe return to competition when the time is right.

“We share our athletes’ disappointment of the season being cancelled, and for students who are in need of support, Camosun offers services in counseling, academic advising and financial aid.

“The college is aware of the many challenges facing students in these difficult times and extends a sincere thank you to the college support services staff, community health professionals, essential services and all others who are working to protect and keep us safe and healthy.”
