The Mt. Douglas Rams began its successful football journey 25 years ago when Coach Roy Vollinger started the program. Since that time football has become widespread in Victoria at the community, high school, and junior football levels. As the Rams celebrate this exciting milestone, they give thanks to Coach Vollinger, who unfortunately passed away, for creating a football program that has seen a lot of success over the years.

For the past 12 years, Head Coach Mark Townsend has been at the helm with his teams winning nine provincial championships, six titles at the Varsity level and three titles at Junior Varsity. Most recently in 2019, the Mount Douglas Junior Varsity Rams captured the AAA Junior Varsity Provincial Championship with a 41 to 21 victory over Lord Tweedsmuir. The Rams defeated a very talented Tweedsmuir team, which makes the win a tremendous accomplishment. The provincial title gave the JV team a perfect 11-0 record for the season.

Although the Rams continued to train throughout the pandemic their 2020 season was cancelled. The 2019 JV winning team has now moved up to the Varsity level and has been ranked #2 on the Varsity Letters’ Big 5 Triple A high school football rankings, missing first place by one vote.

“It is exciting to be back on the field, and celebrating our 25th Anniversary, in what promises to be yet another tremendous year of Rams football. Our Varsity Rams will compete each week against some extremely challenging competition from the likes of traditional mainland powerhouses Vancouver College, Notre Dame, South Delta, STMC and others but the Rams are ready,” states Head Coach Mark Townsend.

Both JV and Varsity teams are playing in exhibition games against John Barsby this week, and the Varsity home opener is on September 24th at 5:00pm at Royal Athletic Park. For game schedules visit their website.
