Scott Arfield has called an end to his international football career. The former Canada captain made 19 international “A” appearances including participation at two Concacaf Gold Cups, one cycle of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, and one edition of Concacaf Nations League A.
“It was a pleasure and privilege to work with Scott Arfield on Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team,” said John Herdman, Head Coach. “His passion for the game was infectious and he helped lay a strong foundation that has helped the team build towards the success in this cycle of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. We wish him all the best in the future.”
Arfield wore the captain’s armband for five of his 19 international “A” matches, including a historic 2:0 win over USA in Toronto on 15 October 2019. It was Canada’s first victory over USA at the men’s international “A” level in 34 years.
He also earned Player of the Match honours twice, a 1:1 draw with Azerbaijan in 2016 as well as a record-breaking 8:0 win over US Virgin Islands on 9 September 2018. He made his Canada debut on 25 March 2016 in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and scored his first goal on 7 July 2017 at the Concacaf Gold Cup. He co-led Canada with three assists in 2016.
“I have loved every minute representing Canada. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities and experiences I have been given both on and off the pitch,” said Arfield. “From day one in the programme, I have stated that this team under the right guidance will fully reach their potential and I’m proud to see it coming to fruition.”
At the club level, Arfield won the Scottish Premiership with Glasgow Rangers FC in 2020-21 and the English Championship with Burnley FC in 2015-16. He has also played three seasons in the Premier League and five seasons in European club competitions including Europa League and Champions League Qualifying.
“I have a fantastic relationship with John Herdman and want to thank him for trusting and giving me the honour to captain the team in his early days as manager,” said Arfield. “Thanks to every staff member, every supporter and every teammate along the way. I’m desperate to see the boys get to Qatar and let the world see what a fantastic place Canadian soccer is in.”
“Thank you, it’s been a pleasure.”
