The Canadian women logged their first Volleyball Nations League (VNL) win of 2023 – a decisive 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-18) match over Korea.

“Today we wanted to come out and focus on our side. Our aim was to play clean, play smart and be relentless. I think we did those things and it’s great to get our first win on the board,” said Head Coach Shannon Winzer.

Layne Van Buskirk, of Windsor, Ont., led the team in scoring for the second straight day with 18 points, while Alexa Gray of Calgary added 11.

This match against Korea will be featured on CBC TV on Saturday at 4 pm ET.

Canada’s next match is against top-ranked Serbia on Sunday, June 04.

Canadian Beach Team Wins Pool to Advance

June 02, 2023: Canada’s Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes defeated Brazilians Agatha Bednarczuk and Rebecca Cavalcanti Barbosa Silva 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) to wrap up group play with a 3-0 record at the Elite 16 tournament on Friday in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

After winning their pool, Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes advanced directly to Saturday’s quarterfinals.

The Canadians, playing just their third Beach Pro Tour tournament together, also beat Switzerland’s Nina Brunner and Tanja Huberli and Czech Republic’s Barbora Hermannova and Marie-Sara Stochlova in pool play.

Canada’s next match is 8:30 am ET on Saturday.
